ISBN-13 Conversion

The International Standards Organization (ISO) is changing the length of the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) from 10 to 13 digits, effective January 1, 2007.

The length of the ISBN is being changed to expand the numbering capacity of the ISBN system and prevent numbering shortages from occurring in certain areas of the world.

Prior to January 1, 2007 books will continue to be published using ISBN-10s.

Beginning January 1, 2007 all books will be published with ISBN-13s.

Converting ISBN-10 to ISBN-13
There are standard rules for converting an ISBN-10 into an ISBN-13.
Begin with any 10-digit ISBN: 094001685-0
Eliminate the check digit: 094001685-
Add the prefix '978': 978-094001685-
Calculate a new check digit: 978-094001685-9
The ISBN-10: 094001685-0
Converts to the ISBN-13: 978-094001685-9

Dual Numbering Format
Publishers may choose to display both the ISBN-10 and the ISBN-13 above the bar code during the transition to ISBN-13. While printing only the ISBN-13 above the bar is recommended after January 2007, publishers may continue dual numbering until the marketplace fully completes the transition to ISBN-13.
